I visited the Amalfi Coast for the first time this summer and it was everything I had hoped for! This is a guide, based on personal experience, of where to stay, visit, eat and drink on the Amalfi Coast.
Where to stay on the Amalfi Coast
I would recommend staying in Praiano, a cute little town about a 20 minute bus ride south of Positano. It’s not very touristy compared to many towns on the Amalfi Coast, and has fabulous restaurants, beaches and bars. Other lovely, less touristy destinations include Ravello, Atrani, Maoiri & Minori.
We stayed at this property in Praiano, hosted by the lovely Adriana. The apartment was absolutely perfect for what we needed and the outdoor area and stunning view of Amalfi Coast really made it – waking up to that every day was like a dream. There was a grocery store, a few lovely restaurants, and a bus stop (number 6 & 7) very close to the apartment. Adriana has a couple of apartments in the same building, some bigger and some smaller, but they all have a stunning view of the Amalfi Coast.
What to do on the Amalfi Coast
- Visit Fiordo di Furore for a swim & cliff jumping (if you’re brave enough!).
- Spend the day at Da Adolfo, swimming in the sea, enjoying the peaceful surroundings and eating great food (see below for more details).
- Take a day trip to Capri. We took the ferry from Amalfi town to get the views of the Amalfi Coast from the sea, and it was truly spectacular. It was also nice to see Amalfi town (if only for a short time). The ferry took about 1 hour 30 minutes from Amalfi town but we got off at Positano on the way back which shortened the journey to an hour.
- Once in Capri, take the funicular to the town and explore the luxurious streets. I recommend visiting Giardini di Augusto -famous gardens with a really good view – and Marina Piccola – a cute beach.
- Take a boat trip. There are lots of boat trip options on the Amalfi Coast and I definitely think it is an activity worth doing. Spend the day taking in the views of the UNESCO World Heritage Site that is Amalfi Coast, whilst swimming and snorkeling in the crystal water.
Where to eat & drink on the Amalfi Coast
- Da Armandino, located at Marina di Praia, is a fabulous family run restaurant with great food and vibes. The setting is absolutely spectacular, between cliffs, and looking out onto the sea. The restaurant was mainly filled with locals so that has to be a good sign (we ran into our Airbnb host and her family!). We walked from our Airbnb and it took about 25 minutes, but the views all along the coast were worth it.
- Il Pirata is a cool bar on the side of the cliff with a good buzz, great cocktails and a dancefloor if you’re in the mood to boogie.
- Da Adolfo is a gorgeous restaurant with fresh delicious food, set on a tiny cove in Laurito. It proved difficult to get a booking at Da Adolfo as they don’t like to answer the phone, and in the end our Airbnb host sorted our booking, so if you’d like to go I’d recommend enquiring with your accommodation host. To get to Da Adolfo you take the boat with the red fish on top from Positano pier. I recommend going early and spending a few hours chilling and swimming on the cove before lunch. You can book sunbeds from Da Adolfo, but these were booked out the day we visited so we lay on the (tiny) public part of the beach. This was a big highlight of our trip to Amalfi Coast and will definitely be back.
- Le Tre Sorelle Wine Room is a nice place for wine & cheese (& amazing tomato salad!).
- Kasai is a fabulous restaurant in Praiano. This was up there with one of our favorite dining experiences of the trip. The food was delicious, service was great and the beautiful view really topped it off (we asked for a table with a view but honestly the whole place has a fabulous ambience).
- Salumeria Da Aldo is a hidden authentic Italian sandwich shop amidst the craziness of Marina Grande, Capri. We asked for whatever they recommended and the owners made us a delicious sandwich (probably the best sandwich I have ever eaten!), with freshly cut prosciutto, fresh mozzarella and tomato and basil salad. It was to die for!
Transport on the Amalfi Coast
- Getting from Naples airport to Amalfi Coast – there are coaches that go directly from Naples airport to Sorrento and Positano from €25 pp. Otherwise you can get a taxi for around €90 that takes approximately 80 minutes. We opted to stay a night in Naples, and got a train from Naples to Sorrento, then a bus from Sorrento to Praiano. That journey only costed €9 pp, and we got to see Naples and Sorrento, but it takes quite some time so wouldn’t recommend if you’re under pressure. When returning to Naples airport, we opted for a private transfer with Connecto Transfers which costed €120 for 4 of us.
- Getting around the Amalfi Coast – the SITA bus system on the Amalfi Coast is very good and we used it for the majority of our trips; travelling to Amalfi town, Fjiord di Furore, Positano and Sorrento. We also took a couple of taxis later in the evenings, these are easy to get from any of the towns and if you’re in a restaurant they can call a taxi for you. The taxis are reasonable enough, a taxi from Praiano to Positano (20 minute drive) for example, costs around €15.
